While enroute to the Philippines carrying explosives and ammunition,the Liberty Cargo ship SS John Burke was hit by a Kamikaze A6M Zero. It was loaded with a 250kg bomb that crashed directly into the cargo hold causing the 1,500 tons of explosive cargo to detonate. All 68 members of the crew (48 Merchant sailors and 20 Marines) were killed instantly. Also a nearby Army FS transport ship was sunk from the resulting explosion, unfortunately it was never identified or known how many crewmen it had
